In ancient Roman times, Porto Cristo was a place of refuge for pirates because of its remarcable geographical situation with an harbour reaching quit far inland. Now it is still a very attractive place which has been well preserved without any big hotels.Its name “Porto Cristo” comes from “Cristo” or “Christ” and has been given around the year 1260 after a storm at sea as a pledge for safe arrival.

The village has two jewels of nature, the Caves of Drac and Caves dels Hams , both world famous, are visited by millions of tourists and are a vital part of the people′s economy.
